How to Style Blue & White Ginger Jars Throughout Your Home

Blue and white ginger jars have been a decorating favorite for centuries, and it's easy to see why. I consider them a great way to add color without overwhelming a space, work with nearly every decorating style, and instantly make a room feel collected rather than decorated– which is the whole basis of House of Modern Vintage.

One of my favorite things about ginger jars is how incredibly versatile they are. Whether you own one special piece or have been collecting them for years, they can be styled in almost every room of your house.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to decorate with blue and white ginger jars.

1. Start with One Statement Piece

If you're just beginning a collection, don't feel like you need a shelf full of porcelain.

A single larger ginger jar on a console table, coffee table, or entry can completely transform a space. Pair it with a stack of design books or a favorite piece of artwork, and you've created a timeless vignette without adding clutter.

Sometimes one beautiful piece makes a stronger statement than several smaller accessories.  And always, fresh flowers are key.

2. Layer Ginger Jars with Books

One of the easiest styling tricks is using coffee table books as a foundation.

Stack two or three books, then place a ginger jar beside them or slightly overlapping the stack. The books add height and texture while making the arrangement feel intentional.

I especially love mixing blue and white porcelain with books about art, architecture, or design to create a collected look.

3. Mix Different Shapes and Sizes

One of the biggest misconceptions about decorating with ginger jars is that everything has to match.

Instead, mix taller jars with smaller lidded jars, combine different patterns, and vary the heights of your display. Collections that grow naturally over time almost always feel more interesting than perfectly matched sets.

Blue and white porcelain is wonderfully forgiving—different patterns often complement each other beautifully.

4. Pair Them with Natural Textures

Blue and white porcelain looks especially beautiful alongside natural materials.

Wicker, warm wood furniture, linen, antique brass, and woven baskets soften the crisp blue patterns and create a space that feels welcoming rather than formal.

This contrast is one of the reasons ginger jars work equally well in traditional, coastal, English country, and modern homes.

5. Add Seasonal Greenery and Flowers

While ginger jars are beautiful on their own, they're even more versatile when used as decorative vessels.

Hydrangeas in the summer, branches in the fall, fresh greenery during the holidays, or a handful of spring blooms instantly change the look without changing your décor.

The blue and white pattern acts almost like a neutral, allowing whatever you place inside to become the focal point.

6. Scatter Them Throughout Your Home

Instead of displaying every ginger jar in one cabinet, try using them throughout your home.

A larger jar on an entry table, a smaller one on a bookshelf, another beside the sofa, and one on a dining table creates a sense of continuity without making the collection feel repetitive.

Repeating blue and white accents from room to room helps tie your home together in a subtle way.

7. Mix Ginger Jars with Vintage Finds

One of my favorite combinations is blue and white porcelain layered with vintage silver, crystal, decorative books, brass accents, and collected artwork.

Each material brings something different to the arrangement. Silver adds warmth, books create height, crystal reflects light, and porcelain provides timeless color and pattern.

When layered together, the display feels like it evolved over time instead of being purchased all at once.

Why Ginger Jars Never Go Out of Style

Decorating trends come and go, but blue and white ginger jars continue to feel fresh decade after decade.

They're classic enough to become heirloom pieces yet versatile enough to move from room to room as your home evolves. Whether you're decorating a coffee table, styling a bookshelf, or creating a welcoming entryway, a blue and white ginger jar adds history, character, and a timeless sense of collected style.

If you're just beginning your collection, start with one piece you truly love. Chances are, it won't be your last.
