The Little Details: Decorating with Tassels

Sometimes it's the smallest things in a room that make it feel the most interesting. A beautiful piece of hardware, an unexpected bit of color, or something decorative hanging from an old cabinet key.

Lately, we've been having a bit of a moment with tassels. They're one of those little details that can make an ordinary corner feel more collected, and once you start decorating with tassels, you'll find yourself looking for places to put them.

From china cabinets and door handles to bedroom furniture, here are a few of our favorite ways to use them around the house.

A Little Something for the China Cabinet

There's something about a tassel hanging from a china cabinet that I just love. Especially an older piece of furniture with beautiful hardware or a key that's practically begging for something decorative.

An ivory tassel against dark wood is always pretty, but I also love bringing in a little color. Navy, sage, and other classic shades work beautifully alongside blue-and-white porcelain, collected china, and antique furniture.

And the best part? You don't have to rearrange a single thing.

Don't Forget the Door Handles

Door handles might be one of the most overlooked places to add a decorative detail.

A small tassel on a bedroom door, closet handle, or cabinet pull adds a little personality without requiring much thought. I especially love them on older doors with interesting hardware.

Decorative key tassels and furniture tassels are also an easy way to introduce a little color without committing to something larger. You can move them around, change them with the seasons, or just leave them exactly where they are.

A Different Way to Dress Up Furniture

Tassels aren't just for keys and cabinets. I love them on armoires, larger pieces of furniture, and anywhere that could use a little softness.

There's no real rule about where they belong, which is probably part of why I like them so much.

You can use one on its own or repeat a few throughout a room. And while I love a coordinated color palette, I don't think everything needs to match perfectly. Sometimes a little contrast is what makes it interesting.

And Yes, Even on the Bed

This might actually be one of my favorite places we've used them.

We have a set of longer decorative tassels hanging from our bedposts, and I absolutely love the way they look. They're a little unexpected, a little dramatic, and exactly the sort of unnecessary decorative detail that makes me happy.

Naturally, the dogs are in the photograph too, because apparently no bedroom photo in our house is complete without them.

The longer styles are especially pretty here because they have enough length to really drape. They also work beautifully on larger furniture where a smaller tassel might get lost.

It's All in the Details

I've always loved rooms that feel collected over time, where the little things are just as interesting as the larger pieces.

Decorative tassels fit right into that idea. They're easy to move around, fun to mix and match, and one of those small additions that can make a familiar piece of furniture feel a little different.

And once you find a place for one, don't be surprised if you start looking for somewhere to hang another.
